How To Become A Member

Want to become a member of Teller County Search and Rescue? This page tells you how.

Thank you for your interest in joining Teller County Search and Rescue. The first step to joining our team is to attend one of our monthly meetings.  Please notify our Membership Committee chairwoman, Janet Bennett (jeb915@gmail.com) you will be attending and arrive at 6:00 pm on the first Monday of the month. We normally meet at the Woodland Park Public Library, lower level,  in the first meeting room on the left.  Please verify the meeting time and location with Janet beforehand as occasionally this room is not available.

After attending 4 consecutive meetings you will be eligible to be interviewed to become a member then voted in by the membership. Dues are $24 dollars per year, but there is a $6 discount if paid before February. Members joining mid year will pay a pro-rated rate of $2 per month for the months remaining in that calendar year. Once on the team you must then complete trainings to achieve the level of classification at which you wish to participate. You may begin attending trainings prior to being voted in as a member, as long as you fill out a waiver form at each training.

The classes of membership are as follows:

  • General Support - Assists with day to day functions of the unit, but is not involved in searches.
  • Mission Support - Participates in searches in an organizational or supply role, does not go into the field.
  • SAR Tech I - Participates in non-technical single day assignments on a search.
  • SAR Tech II - Participates in technical multi-day searches. Capable of being self sufficient in the field for 72 hours.

There are also many certifications that may be acquired by each individual. Some of those certifications are:

  • Team Leader - Is familiar with operations of a search and can appropriately lead a team of searchers in the field.
  • High Angle Rescue Team Member - Participates in technical rescues on High Angle terrain.
  • Hasty Team Member - Trained and available to deploy quickly and begin initial search tasks.
  • Basic ATV
  • Advanced ATV
  • Medical certifications (Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness First Responder, EMT, etc.)
  • High Angle Rescue Team or HART
  • Tracker

Though none of these certifications are required for any member, any additional skills acquired will be used by the team.
