New lithium (non-rechargeable) batteries have a slightly higher voltage than "normal" alkaline batteries or recharcheable NiMH batteries. This higher voltage causes some Garmin GPS receiver models to shut down. Here is one reader's response to a recent article on the subject.

We had a fantastic turnout for a superb annual avalanche training session. Friday night, 11 January, we met at the Northeast Teller Fire Station for a classroom session. Saturday, 12 January, we met at the office and proceeded to Glen Cove on the north side of Pikes Peak for a day of playing in the snow and learning about avalanche search techniques. Kudos go to Mitch Walma for planning and executing a superb training event that got us all prepared to participate in avalanche rescue operations.
